CareerBuilder Challenge Courses:
TPC Stadium Course
The PGA West Stadium Course is a golf course located in La Quinta, California. The PGA West Stadium Course was designed by Pete Dye and is viewed as the sequel to the TPC at Sawgrass. The Pete Dye golf course, TPC Stadium delivers multiple adrenaline rushes throughout the round. Host to PGA TOUR “Q-School” Finals every other year, PGA TOUR hopefuls must navigate the island green of hole #17, known as Alcatraz, as well as the menacing water-lined 18th. Imagine needing to make par-par on two of the toughest finishing holes in golf to earn the coveted PGA TOUR card!
Named “Stadium” thanks to Dye’s ingenious plan to sculpt spectator seating into the natural terrain, many historic moments in golf have occurred here, including Lee Trevino’s unforgettable hole-in-one on Alcatraz. This won him a carry-over Skin worth $175,000 in the 1987 made-for-TV “Skins Game,” hosted at PGA WEST from 1986-1991. With five sets of tees, the TPC Stadium lures all skill levels.
Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West
The Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course, designed by ‘The Golden Bear’ is the third course at PGA WEST to host the CareerBuilder Challenge 2019 and has been a part of the tournament’s history since 2009. Also a Certified Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary, at 6,951 yards long, the Nicklaus Private has the highest rating (74.3) and slope (146) of the three Private Courses at PGA WEST.
Initially, Nicklaus was commissioned to design this course to host the 1991 Ryder Cup. With International television coverage gaining prominence, the event was moved to the East Coast to Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course. Nicklaus deemed this incredibly scenic and unique layout one of his Signature Courses.
La Quinta Country Club
La Quinta Country Club was established in 1959 and for fifty years has been known to the world’s golfing community as the “Jewel of the Desert.” It was on their rolling tree-lined fairways where the late President Dwight Eisenhower first became devoted to golf in the desert. Even today, professionals and amateurs alike consider this course, designed by Frank and Lawrence Hughes, one of the finest; its greens among “the best on tour.”
La Quinta Country Club lily pads float on the shimmering lakes that come into play on eight of the holes along the 7060 yards of emerald fairways. The grounds are abundant with rose bushes and mature trees adding to the beauty of the course. Features added to the course recently are the attractive water fountain that separates the 9th and 18th greens, the rambling waterfall at the 7th green, and another along the 8th fairway.
